Art Major/Minor Requirements

The art major offers a wide range of options for those who wish to pursue painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, metalsmithing, art therapy or work in a gallery or museum. Students select one focus area from the three studio concentrations:
- Integrated Art
The Integrated Art focus offers the student the opportunity to make connections with other disciplines at the college. The student may self-design by choosing an area of connection and taking 12 credits in that discipline. See Integrated Art below. - Studio Art
Studio art focus is for the student who wants a traditional art major. The student will choose a specific medium to develop and pursue at a higher level. See Studio Art below. - Art Therapy
Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy which engages the client in the creation of artwork. The Art Therapy focus at the undergraduate level both introduces the student to issues in psychology and develops the student’s facilities in multiple studio areas. See Art Therapy below. - Art History Minor
The Art History minor concentrates on the history or art. It is suggested that it be taken with a major in History or Business. See Art History minor below.
Students transferring into the art major from another institution may not transfer more than 18 credits toward the Cedar Crest art major.
Field trips may be required for all art courses.
Once a student has declared an Art major she is required to attend annual departmental portfolio critiques.
Requirements for the Major
A minimum of 46 credits are required for art majors concentrating in studio art. A course in mathematics is required and an appropriate level course in Computer Sciences is highly recommended. Art majors are asked to attend annual departmental portfolio critiques. Printmaking and Sculpture studio courses are offered in rotation for the evening major.
