CEDAR CREST COLLEGE
Career Resources for Biological Sciences
The world wide web is a great place to begin your job search process. You can search for positions and learn more about prospective schools and employers. However, it's also easy to get lost. Collected here are some of the major web sites offering job listings and other career information and services. Most of these resources are available for anyone to use. A few require free registration. Some offer job alert services, which will automatically e-mail you new listings that meet your search criteria. If you know of other links that should be added, e-mail me at kkfitzge@cedarcrest.edu.
Some suggestions for using these resources
- Determine what job titles apply to you
Unfortunately, there isn't much consistency in job titles. If you're looking for a B.S. level lab postion, it might be under the heading of "Lab Technician", "Research Technician", or "Research Assistant" (although that often refers to a graduate student fellowship). On the other hand, "Research Associate" or "Research Scientist" usually mean a Ph.D. level position.
- Learn how each site works
Again, there isn't much consistency in how job sites are organized. You'll have to learn how to navigate each one. Some sites will just dump a listing of positions. Others make you go through a keyword search. This will save time in the long run, but you may miss listings if your keywords are too specific. Try starting with very broad terms.
