New Management Major/Minor

Women are entering the ranks of management more than ever before, making this an exciting time to pursue a degree in management at Cedar Crest College.  This program of study, newly revised, provides a strong foundation for those wishing to emerge as business leaders, with skills in management, finance and accounting.  This carefully assembled core set of courses offers the knowledge base essential for managerial footing, while providing a platform for analysis in the dynamic business environment.  Based on your interests and career direction, you may broaden your understanding of management through careful selection of electives from an extensive list, including studies in management, marketing, economics, law and information systems.  Students can also deepen their study in human resources or marketing by specializing in one of these concentration areas.

A primary focus for the department is an emphasis on understanding the issues related to women in business and the workplace.  A new initiative and speaker series bring women business leaders and entrepreneurs to campus to engage students and the community in a discussion of the challenges and opportunities, so different from those encountered just ten years ago.  Through these activities, students supplement their classroom exploration of management with the practical experiences of today’s business leaders.

The business world is characterized by both adaptation and innovation.  In the Cedar Crest classroom, you will discuss important topics such as eBusiness, technology and the global marketplace in virtually all of your coursework.  Your abilities to write and speak effectively, think critically, solve problems using the computer and work in a team environment will develop throughout your program of study.  Students will learn to direct and motivate others through the study of Leadership.  In the senior seminar course, you will research, design and present a business plan.  An optional senior internship will test your ability to apply what you have learned to the corporate environment.

If you have talents and interests outside of business, the major provides the flexibility of pursuing a double major or minor in another discipline.  A major or minor in information systems adds additional competence in technology.  The liberal arts college offers exciting opportunities to pursue a program in the arts, sciences, humanities, or social sciences.

The faculty have extensive teaching experience as well as professional work experience in such fields as management, finance, accounting, marketing, international business, and law.  Each student works closely with one or more faculty advisors and mentors throughout her four years of study to design an academic program best suited to her interests and career goals.  In addition, professors meet with students to provide help outside of the classroom, supplementing in-class activities and clarifying difficult concepts one on one.  In the classroom, professors routinely incorporate ‘real-world’ experience with foundational learning.  In sum, the faculty are dedicated to providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed and thrive in the corporate world.

Whether you envision yourself as an entrepreneur with her own business or as an executive in a small or large corporation, your path will begin at Cedar Crest.
