The Master of Education Degree is designed to prepare professional educators or individuals who wish to become certified. This program provides the student with the learning opportunities that meet the challenges of the 21st century. Students in this program are prepared to be teachers that influence educational policy development and reform through leadership in political engagement and advocacy for children, families and the profession.
Program concentrations are designed to meet the needs of both the certified educational professional and the candidate seeking initial certification in elementary and secondary education through three distinct options:
-
ART OF TEACHING Concentration – designed for the individual who wants to gain master level competence in all aspects of learning and teaching as well as a working knowledge of the politics and policy processes of the educational system at the local, state and national level. This concentration provides individualized opportunities for the student to become an expert practitioner in the educational field. The student in this concentration can also explore a thesis option. In addition, the student is able to make herself/himself more marketable by adding on a special education or ESL certification. (See Art of Teaching Checklist)
-
ELEMENTARY CERTIFICATION Concentration – designed for prospective teachers who hold a B.A. or B.S. Degree who seek initial Pennsylvania Department Certification as a K-6 teacher. Please note that currently in PA, elementary certified may teach in some middle school settings. (See Elementary Checklist) In addition, the student is able to make herself/himself more marketable by adding on a special education or ESL certification. (See Elementary Special Education Certification or ESL Checklists)

Degree who seek initial Pennsylvania Department Certification as a teacher in one of the following content areas in grades 7-12: Biology, Chemistry, Social Studies, English, General Science, Mathematics and Spanish (K-12).
