Student TeachingMost of our prospective teachers begin field experiences in local public schools in their second semester of the freshman year, and complete four field experiences prior to student teaching in the fall or spring semester of the senior year. These pre-student teaching fields provide our students with the opportunity to practice teaching and classroom management strategies in real classrooms and build a high level of self-confidence prior to student teaching. Students experience placements in suburban, urban, and charter school settings to give breadth to their experience base. Cedar Crest has a special partnership with the Discovery Center which many of our Field III students select in lieu of a more traditional classroom experience. In addition to the field experiences, our elementary majors have numerous opportunities to participate in classrooms or other group activities with children in the preschool through sixth grade age range. Arrangements may be made for student teaching abroad if the student demonstrates a high level of competence in the pre-student teaching fields. Additionally, education department faculty occasionally offer opportunities for study tours to explore education in other countries throughout the world. Graduates completing student teaching are mentored as they enter their search for their first professional teaching position - we are proud of the high standards our graduates meet and faculty work with you as you search for your first professional position.
