The purposes of the nursing honor society are to recognize superior achievement and the development of leadership qualities, to foster high professional standards, to encourage creative work and to strengthen commitment to the ideas and purposes of the nursing profession.

Nursing students are eligible for membership if, at the end of the junior year when they have completed 50% of the nursing curriculum, they have a grade point average of 3.0 or better, are in the upper 35% of their nursing class and have demonstrated academic integrity and professional leadership potential. The number of candidates cannot exceed one-third of the local number of nursing students graduating in each class.

Theta Rho Chapter at Cedar Crest College is governed by the by-laws recommended by Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society of nursing.
