What the Critics Are Saying
KIND WORDS FOR SOME SPECIAL PERFORMANCES
* Best sets -- To Cedar Crest College's team of Roy Hine
and Roxanne Amico for "Alice in Wonderland," a fantasy; "The
Trojan Women," a mad vision of wrecked cities from Troy to Sarajevo,
and "Yours, Anne," a stylized but fundamentally realistic impression
of the Frank family's Amsterdam attic. Gauzy or gritty, the sets pleased
the eye, challenged the imagination, accommodated the action and made maximum
use of available space.

`SLEEPING BEAUTY' RESOUNDS WITH MUSIC, MESSAGES AT CREST
The adaptation of the Grimm Brothers tale by Marc Robin
turns the princess and prince into contemporary comedic rebels, and like
many fairy tales for the '90s, the witch learns the error of her ways and
turns from foe to friend. The student company at Cedar Crest College in
Allentown pulled it off admirably last weekend at the Tompkins College Center
Theatre, which was filled with children and parents who left happily with
new wisdom about the virtues of tolerance and individuality.
In the words of Amber, expressing pleasure at her magical
smooch from the prince, "Sleeping Beauty" is "neat."

MUSICAL `YOURS, ANNE,' LOOKS, SOUNDS GOOD
The cast, particularly Amy Veneskey in the huge, musically
demanding role of Anne, sings beautifully and acts convincingly, and since
the play presents some serious barriers to character development their acting
has to be really good to convince. Veneskey's role calls for an actress
the size of a child, with the memory of a mainframe and the stamina of a
teamster, and she fills it to a T.
Anne Frank's story has become part of 20th century Western
culture. Any new telling is welcome.

CEDAR CREST DISPLAYS SOME NICE COMIC ACTING IN `PARALLEL
LIVES'
"Parallel Lives: The Kathy and Mo Show" by Mo
Gaffney and Kathy Najimy must have seemed a natural for the Cedar Crest
Stage Company. A series of 11 unrelated satiric sketches written by and
for women performers, it lampoons girl talk as well as male social crudity
and egotism and it aims its barbs at both high and low culture.

CAST OF SEVEN WOMEN IS A STRENGTH OF `AMERICAN BEAUTY'
AT CEDAR CREST
The good news about Cedar Crest Stage Company's "American
Beauty" includes its seven-woman cast's unmistakable dedication to
performing well, its amusing satiric touches and its few solid serious points,
most of them about competition.

ALICE' A WONDER AT CEDAR CREST
The set, costumes and lighting are striking, and not just
when they highlight special effects like Alice falling down the rabbit hole
or the Jabberwock attacking from the forest.
