Mission
Performing Arts Department
The mission of the performing arts majors at Cedar Crest College is
to encourage and develop individual artists, prepare students for future
study in the performing arts and to make available multiple perspectives
in dance, theatre, creative writing and music through experiential work,
foundational information and skills for all students and offer individual
mentoring of advanced students.
Dance Major
The Mission of the Dance Major is to provide multiple perspectives and experiences for understanding dance as a discipline of study. Emphasis is placed on how dance connects with other disciplines within Liberal Arts Education. The dance program provides all students with a framework for the exploration of creativity and individual artistic and intellectual expression.
Music Major
The mission of the music major is to develop a broad base of skills in music performance and theory through coursework in the areas of history, performance, theory and related courses in the concentrations. Emphasis is placed on understanding historically significant styles and genres of music, performing in an ensemble and developing personal goals for understanding and using music in a career or interest area. The major courses are taught in the context of their value to the liberal arts and are available to all students regardless of major.
Theatre Major
The mission of the theatre major is to develop artistic and leadership
skills toward the practical application of theatre through coursework
in the areas of history, performance, design, technical theatre and production.
Emphasis is placed on understanding the balance between practical and
artistic choices, accepting responsibility and promoting team work. The
foundational courses are taught in the context of their value to the
liberal arts and are available to all students regardless of major, while
advanced course prepare students to apply for graduate work.
