Future Employment Possibilities

Forensic science has greatly impacted the criminal justice system in recent years. Due to advances in scientific instrumentation and DNA testing in particular, the criminal justice system has come to rely on forensic science to help solve crimes. It is often found that in many types of cases, prosecutors will not prosecute and juries and judges will not convict without forensic evidence. Due to this success, forensic laboratory systems are rapidly expanding. For instance, construction is already underway for the new forensic science laboratory for the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office that will employ over 500 scientists. This will increase the number of working scientists at that agency by almost five-fold.

Federal, state, and local laboratories employ forensic scientists. On the federal level, forensic scientists are employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Secret Service. State and local laboratories are normally administered by the state’s attorney general, police agencies, or prosecutor’s offices. Forensic science positions also exist in the private sector.

The goal of the Cedar Crest Forensic Science Program is to produce quality scientists. Upon completion of the B.S. Program, students will have all of the required coursework to begin actively working in a Forensic Lab. Currently, two Cedar Crest graduates are employed in supervisory positions in forensic science laboratories. Julie Reynolds Willey ’88 is the Director of the Delaware State Police Crime Laboratory and Lisa Palumbo-Desire ’91 is a supervising forensic scientist at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in New York City. Recent Cedar Crest Forensic Science Program graduates have found employment in the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, National Medical Services (Willow Grove, Pennsylvania),The Bode Technology Group in Maryland, and the Chief Medical Examiner’s Offices of New York City and Wilmington, Delaware.
