Mission

History Major

The History Major is designed to provide an excellent undergraduate preparation for students who will pursue careers in education, government, communications, the social services, business, and many culture-related fields. Taking the contemporary world as a point of departure, the major employs a knowledge-based, skills-oriented approach. The skills taught include the ability to analyze texts and sources critically, to synthesize broad categories of information, and to apply these to problems of contemporary society and politics. The History Major provides students essential experience in learning to express themselves effectively in speaking and writing and to employ technologies of electronic communication in efficient and effective ways. At the same time, an education in history prepares students to participate knowledgeably in the life around them in its multiple dimensions, personal, national, and global.

Political Science Major

The mission of the Political Science major is to provide students with a deeper understanding of the key domestic and international issues facing the United States in the 21st century. As such, the program supports both the general mission of the college and the interests of students who aspire specifically to careers in the fields of law, education, political science, public administration, and public affairs.
