Welcome to The Anthropology of Music and Expressive Culture

The course introduces the field known as ethnomusicology, the study of non-western folk and classical music and the folk music of the western continents. We study music in its cultural context giving attention to such topics as the meaning and function of music in any given group, the role and status of musicians, how people conceive of creativity and musical talent, and how musical cultures influence one another. The areas we survey include Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. Since world music including genres such as Afropop is attracting big audiences, we will also give attention to how popular world music, also called "World Beat", has developed over the past twenty or so years.
