The term "World Beat" is a relatively new one and refers to music that is produced in the urban areas of the world for popular consumption. Much of it is rock inspired. It is usually performed by full-time musicians, copyrighted, distributed by big record labels on CDs and cassette tapes, and disseminated by the mass media. Some other labels for world beat include world ambient, global pop, tribal, ethnic fusion, techno-tribal. I find these links less reliable than those on the other pages.
